Mia & Nora: Welcome to the World!

Tomorrow's maternity shoot turned into today's newborn shoot when Mia and Nora surprised their parents with an early arrival. Mom and Dad were very lucky to arrive here in the states just in time for their daughters' birth via surrogate. The surrogate is one of my dear friends, and we are so proud of her strength and generosity of heart. She gave an amazing gift to very deserving parents!

Last night I got to work with Crystal and Randy on their engagement photos. They were very good sports about the mosquitoes in the area and hiking through the weeds. There were even kind to me when I slipped and fell trying to get down to a creek for a place to shoot. One broken flash unit and a bruised ego later we got a great shot, below. I think it was worth the slip!

Retro Looks and Little Boys

Today I went down town to have a little fun with Sarah and her beautiful retro look. We shot around the Cascade Theatre and Lorenz Hotel area. She has beautiful features that fit the look well. And since we were having so much fun shooting, we lost track of time so Sarah had to go to her dinner date in her full retro look!
I met Sarah through her good friend Ashley, our Trash the Dress Winter Edition bride. Ashley came along with us and brought her son Jarrett. Jarrett was so excited to be down town near the railroad tracks. He kept asking over and over when we could go see the trains. We finally relented and headed to the railway crossing. Lucky for Jarrett there were two engines parked on the tracks for him to explore. I couldn't resist taking a few shots of Jarrett, his mom, and his favorite engines!

PPNV Booth at the CVHS Easter Festival

Today I had the opportunity to work for a great cause. The Central Valley High School Friday Night Live Club hosted an Easter festival in Shasta Lake City. My fellow PPNVers (Professional Photographers of the North Valley) Katrina and Michael helped me with the Easter Bunny booth. We shot photos of local children with the Easter Bunny for charity to benefit the high school drug awareness program. We met many people in the community and had a great time working for a great cause.

Casey and Leah's Wedding

I first met Leah when I shot her senior session a few years ago. I was thrilled when she called about her upcoming wedding. I knew she was a fun, high energy girl and would be a lot of fun to work with again.

The wedding took place at a new venue for me, The Gaia Hotel. The gardens and ponds, with their black and white swans, made for a beautiful, natural setting for the wedding.

The swans were very interested in the wedding couple. One tried to attack Leah's dress while we were setting up the image above. She was a good sport and joined Casey again on the rocks once her brother had shooed the birds away.

Thanks to the new Mr. and Mrs. Barnhart and their family and friends for making me feel not just like a hired photographer, but like a welcome guest as well.

Casey and Leah met in grade school and had a friendship for many years. A love like theirs, deeply rooted in friendship, is sure to last a lifetime.

Trash the Dress Winter Edition

Today I had a wonderful opportunity to shoot a bride in the snow. We took our very brave bride, Ashley, up to Castle Lake in Siskiyou County for this very unique session. The frozen lake served as a magical setting for our latest edition of Trash the Dress.

There were hikers, snow mobilers, and ice fishermen all around the area. They thought we were a bit crazy, I'm sure. One hiker even got down on one knee and proposed to Ashley, much to the amusement of his fellow snow-shoers!

Ashley wasn't the only one to roll around in the snow. I spent much of the day sitting in the cold too!

Ashley was a very good sport, despite the cold and lots of crazy stares. We had a great time experimenting in a new and unusual setting.

Nowain Photo wins another Best of Show!

Tonight I was awarded Best of show in the PPNV print competition for the image below, "Beware the Sirens' Song".

This image came to be over the Summer of 2008 when we staged a "Trash the Dress" fashion shoot at Skinny Dip Falls near Montgomery Creek. We dragged 1 photographer, 2 assistants, 4 brides, 1 videographer , 7 children under the age of 8, and 1 babysitter out to the falls for a day of fun and creativity. Three of the brides were previous Nowain Photography brides.

We set up a makeshift dressing area and play zone for the kids and started shooting away. It was more of a "dunk" the dress than "trash" the dress shoot as each bride said her dress came out cleaner than when it went in! We had a great time on a hot July day. Tonight I was awarded a great honor from PPNV: Member's Choice, Print of the Year for the image "Swept Away", below.

This was one of many wonderful images made over Labor Day weekend in San Francisco. Jim and Jessica were married in April 2008 and were very excited to jump in and "Trash the Dress". Mother Nature gave us a rare, beautiful day at Baker Beach and we took full advantage of it. We spent 4 hours on the beach, in the water, and above the beach in the old military outpost. We got these wonderful images thanks to the help of my lovely assistant Anya and her mad skills with a reflector.

Jim and Jessica were great sports about the water, sand and nudists. Yes, I said nudists! You see, Baker Beach is a nude beach. Just a few strokes of Photoshop was all it took to remove any undesirable onlookers from the images. We were truly blessed to have such a wonderful day.
